To Sag or Not to Sag

My appointment with the surgeon is in two days - YEAH!! I hope I get good news... ala we can move ahead with testing, get a date to start the pre-op diet and maybe even a tentative surgery date.

With things getting closer, I am starting to get more worried. I've never been under general anaesthesia before. I'm terrified that I could have monumental complications because of something I'm choosing to have. Of course, I could have (and do already have) complications from my weight and it's just a matter of time before those complications escalate if I don't do something. I'm going to call the physician's board to check on my doctor. Any other tips?

I'm also starting to wonder more about sagging skin. Kudos to the "Band Babe" for her bravery in posting her tummy tuck photos. I've never had a problem with saggy skin in the past but that was always about 60+ pounds ago and one pregnancy. I'm not sure I could handle a tummy tuck but I really hope that things sort of shrink back into place. Is there anything that can be done to help that?

  1. Don't worry about the anesthetic. Unless you have any relatives with terrible complications you will do ok. I think I've been put out at least 10 times and I woke up. Eventually the weight will catch up to you and you might get problems (high BP, cholesterol, diabetes--you know them) which have a bigger chance of dying young.

We're here to listen so go ahead and share your fears.

  2. The only time I was under anesthesia was when I was 4 and had a lazy eye corrected. Obviously I came out fine so am hoping for the same good luck. :-) Does your physician have any type of support group? Blogging is great, but sometimes having people in front of you who have had the surgery done by the same physician help lessen the fear.

  3. To start with, I loved your post, What's in the mirror! Great thinking and writing. Just a great post!!

As for the general, talk to your surgeon about your surgeon about your fears. He may be able to get you in contact with an anesthesiologist who can help you relax. If you are generally healthy, which it sounds like you are, then you should be fine. And Sandy Lee has a great idea - how have your relatives, especially mom, dad and siblings, done with it.

I hope you get good news from the surgeon at your appt. I can't wait to hear how it goes!!

  4. Hi Susan, I just found your blog and wanted to send you some encouragment. My lap-band surgery was also my first surgery. What helped me was preparing for the possibility that it might not end well. I prepared my will and wrote notes to my fella and two daughters. I also made sure all my important docs were all together in my fire-proof safe. It probably sounds kind of morbid, but I felt better knowing that I'd done everything I could to make the transition easier for them. The notes I wrote were really upbeat and the truth is I felt at peace with the idea after going through the whole process.

Having said all that, I am quite sure that your surgery will be just fine and you will go on to meet your weight loss goals. I am so glad I made the decision to get my lap-band. It is 100% the best thing I've ever done for myself!

  5. I just read your blog start to finish. :) How exciting that now your appt with the surgeon is TOMORROW!!! I have had: C-Section, Tonsils removed and Knee surgery. No big deal with anesthesia. It is harder to spell than to deal with. My band date is May 25th so we may be band neighbors.
